I can't comment about XML Spy -- I don't use it, and it gets many
reports of incompatibility with the spec.

I'm surprised about the regression wrt MSXML, but the fact of the
matter is that there are a number of _different_ schema validators in
different Microsoft products.

I'll try to get some MSoft people to look at this (but first, could
you please confirm that MSXML rejects _all_ your examples) -- as
Kasimir said, your first example is equivalent to a restriction of
anyType, and that should work for sure.
